  • In 2002, McClellan passed on a scholarship to Missouri to sign with his hometown Cardinals after they chose him in the 25th round out, of Hazelwood (Missouri) High School. Scott Melvin was the scout who signed him.
  • In November 2007, Kyle got married.

  • May 15, 2011: Kyle's wife, Bridget gave birth to Olivia Grace. The McClellans were parents for the first time.

  • Kyle's father, Terry McClellan owns an expansive 15,000-square foot training facilty called the Fieldhouse Baseball and Softball Training Center in a St. Louis suburb, Florissant. A converted rental furniture distribution center in a Hazelwood industrial park, the facility is divided into nine batting cages and festooned with flags that flew over old Busch Stadium. The front office includes an athletic training facility run by Cardinals physical therapist Keith Sanders.

Kyle often instucts and coaches high school players during the off-seasons.

"I used to make more money doing this than I did during the season," said McClellan, who took down $8,000 at Class A two years before making his Major League debut April 1, 2008. "But I love doing this. You can make a difference. No way I'd want to stop doing this now."

The facility's coaching roster includes Springfield manager and former Boston Red Sox pitching coach Al Nipper. Minor league outfielder Cody Haerther also instructs. Kyle once tutored 36 students. Now he works with 20 in half-hour sessions spread over two weekdays. His fee is the same as five other pro level coaches: $425 for eight weekly half-hour sessions. The money is almost incidental compared to the Major League minimum.

McClellan speaks proudly of redirecting two talented brothers with attendance problems that eventually cost them their high school eligibility. "They weren't doing good in class; their attendance was about 50 percent, but they would hit all the time," McClellan said. "I hammered on them. My Dad hammered them. They started going to school all the time, got their grades up to a 3.0 GPA, and got scholarships to play together in college. To me, that's why we're here."
