  • In 2005, the Brewers drafted Andrew in the 16th round, even after he underwent Tommy John surgery. But Bailey didn't sign, returning to Wagner College for his senior year.
  • In 2006, Bailey would have ranked second in the Northwest League in ERA if he hadn't fallen three innings shy of qualifying.
  • During the winter before 2007 spring training, the Baseball America Prospect Handbook rated Andrew as 28th-best prospect in the A's organization. They moved Bailey all the way up to #5 in the spring of 2008, but dropped him back down to #23 in the winter before 2009 spring training.
  • In 2009, Bailey was named the American League Rookie of the Year after he saved 26 of 30 games for the A's.
  • Andrew's wife, Amanda, delivered daughter Theodora on July 2, 2012, a couple of days before Amanda was to have her baby shower, and several weeks before she was due to give birth.

"It's funny, we were supposed to deliver in Boston, she was due in August, my wife went home for a baby shower in Connecticut and a couple of days before the baby shower, we were on the road in Seattle and she decided to join the party," said Bailey. "It was a blessing that she was able to give birth in Connecticut and she was taken care of at [Yale-New Haven Hospital]."

Typically, newborns stay in the hospital with their mother for a couple of days and then go home. But because Theodora was premature, and thus still developing, she wouldn't go home until early September.

Theodora is named after Amanda's father, Theodore. And she is completely healthy, just a normal baby who was born prematurely.

  • Bailey made the AL All-Star team in 2009 and 2010.

  • December 23, 2015: Joining the Phillies fulfills  a lifetime dream of Bailey. Bailey's earliest baseball memories as a kid in South Jersey include Veterans Stadium, Darren Daulton, John Kruk, Curt Schilling, and the 1993 National League champion Phillies.

He will have the opportunity to play for his hometown team next year and will compete for a bullpen job alongside some other recently acquired veterans.

"As a kid growing up in South Jersey, you dream of playing for the Phillies," Bailey said in an interview with MLB.com. "My whole family is a fan of the organization. It's awesome to hear from so many friends and family. The feedback has been tremendous. Everybody is super excited. I look forward to the opportunity to wear the pinstripes. It'll be good to get back home, back to South Jersey. I'm really looking forward to it."

Bailey attended Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, N.J. The A's selected him in the sixth round of the 2006 Draft out of Wagner College.

"I think I did a pre-draft workout at Citizens Bank Park," Bailey said. "I don't know how far their interest went, but I think there was an opportunity there in the sense I was invited to a workout at least. It's an exciting time. I definitely can't wait."

"I'm coming off injuries and working my way back, so it's the opportunity I was looking for the most," he said. "The Phillies presented me with a great one and I hope to take full advantage of it."

Bailey said he is healthy and he will have no restrictions when Spring Training opens in February."The surgery I had was pretty much a reconstruction of the shoulder," Bailey said. "The surgeon gave me an 18-24 month timeframe to be 100 percent. The 18-month mark was Spring Training last year. I was able to go into camp and compete for a job. I came through healthy and ready to go. I worked my way back up and ended up getting called back to the big leagues, which was unbelievable. After that road, you wait so long to get back to what you want, I got a taste of it again, and I look forward to building off that month I had with the Yankees.

"If I go into camp healthy and ready to go, hopefully it works out. I feel like I'm 100 percent ready to go." (T Zolecki - MLB,com - December - 2015)

  • Nov 21, 2023: The Red Sox hired Bailey as the pitching coach for the 2024 season. As a former reliever of the Red Sox, Bailey knows what it is like to play for the Red Sox.

“I think it's just a tool in our tool belt of experiences to kind of lean on. know what it's like to blow a save in Boston, said Bailey". I know what it's like to be a player who has success as well in periods of time. We won the World Series and we finished last place [in Boston]. I experienced both of those.

“I’ve kind of run the gamut in Boston as well in a really short period of time, but I think it's an amazing market. It's got an amazing fanbase. There's just an energy and an aura around Fenway Park and the fans and I love it. And I'm excited to be back on it back at it. But yeah, I think we can draw from those experiences, for sure.” (L Browne - MLB.com - Nov 21, 2023)

  • Aug 15, 2016: The Angels sign free agent Bailey
  • Nov 3, 2016: Bailey chose free agency
  • Nov 9, 2016: The Angels signed free agent Bailey

PERSONAL:

  • Bailey is a big, physical righthander with a fine 91-95 mph four-seam FASTBALL with heavy sink and cutting action. He also has a solid-average 12-to-6 CURVEBALL with good rotation and depth, and a developing CHANGEUP that could become a very good pitch if he learns to command it more consistently.

His fastball has late sinking, cutting and boring action. He fires it on both sides of the plate, enabling him to retire both left and righthanded hitters.

But Andrew's success is due to A's roving minor league pitching coach Gil Patterson teaching him an 88-91 mph CUT FASTBALL. It turned Bailey's career around. He throws that cutter once or twice an at-bat. His fastball has a natural right-to-left break, and the cutter breaks more while remaining on the same plane.

  • 2016 Season Pitch Usage: 4-seam Fastball: 62.5% of the time; Curve 12.6% of the time; and Cutter 24.7% of the time.

  • Andrew is an aggressive righthander. But in the past, has struggled to repeat his arm slot and delivery, which has a lot of moving parts, making it difficult for him to command the strike zone and execute his pitches. His delivery is deceptive, though. There's some effort and head tilt in his delivery, which makes it difficult for him to hold his stuff into the late innings.
  • Bailey sometimes gets distracted and tries to pitch too quickly with speedsters on the basepaths. (Aaron Fitt-Baseball America-9/28/06)
  • Andrew throws across his body, which puts excess strain on his arm, but does also add natural movement to his heater.
  • Bailey is a big workhorse of a righthander. But the A's moved him to the bullpen in 2008, and he relished his new role.

"I'm excited to be in the bullpen and coming in at the most important times in the game," he said. "Each and every opportunity I get, I'm thankful for having that opportunity. I want to get to the big leagues and stick, whether starting or relieving. When they told me I was going to the bullpen, I took it as an opportunity and ran with it."

  • As of the start of the 2018 season, Bailey has a career record of 16-14 with 3.12 ERA, having allowed 29 home runs and 212 hits in 274 innings.

  • 2019: Bailey became the bullpen coach for the Angels.

  • 2020: Andrew was a Pitching Coach for the Giants.

  • 2024: Andrew was Pitching Coach for the Red Sox.  Bailey pitched for the Red Sox from 2012-13.

  • May 2005: Bailey had Tommy John surgery after just 42 innings of pitching for Wagner College. Dr. James Andrews did the procedure.

  • March 14, 2011: Tests revealed Bailey was suffering from a strained right forearm, which was actually good news (because it was not an elbow injury). He began the season on the D.L.
  • March 26-August 14, 2012: Andrew injured his thumb, but he's not sure how. Probably, it happened when he collided with the Pirates' Alex Presley at first base during a March 21 game.

"A couple days later, he was squeezing some shampoo, and said, 'Man, my thumb is sore,'" pitching coach Bob McClure said. "You have stuff that's sore all the time. It's like, 'Well, you know, big deal. It'll go away.' It just didn't go away."

It was decided on April 3, 2012 to have surgery to repair the thumb.

  • April 29-May 20, 2013: Bailey was on the D.L. with right biceps inflammation.

  • July 13, 2013: Andrew was on the D.L. with a right shoulder strain.
