PERSONAL:

  • Wells' hometown of Brazoria, in southeast Texas, is close to the Mexico border.
  • Jared was a 31st-round draft pick out of San Jacinto (Texas) Junior College in 2002. He signed with the Padres as a draft-and-follow in May, 2003, with Scout Jay Darnell getting his name on the contract.

Wells went 4-6, 2.75 in his professional debut at short-season Eugene in 2003.

  • At one point in the 2005 season with the Lake Elsinore Storm (CAL-Padres), Wells had 28 consecutive scoreless innings. He went on to lead the California League in ERA.

He was the Padres organization's 2005 Pitcher of the Year.

  • Wells was the top starter for Team USA in the World Cup in September, 2005.

  • During the off-season before 2006 spring training, Baseball America rated Jared as 7th-best prospect in the Padres organization. (The magazine had Wells at #15 in the spring of 2005).

And in the spring of 2007, they had Wells as #9 in the San Diego farm system. But they dropped him all the way down to #23 in the spring of 2008.

  • Jared tends to be somewhat arrogant. And his work ethic and conditioning have been questioned.

    TRANSACTIONS

  • May 27, 2008: The Mariners sent RHP Cha Seung Baek to the Padres, acquiring Wells.

  • January, 2010: Jared signed with the Astros organization.
  •

    PITCHING:

    • Wells is not overpowering, but his sailing 4-seam FASTBALL is in the 90-95 mph range with very good life. And in 2005, he added a sinking 2-seamer at 88-92 mph. He also has command of his hard-breaking SLIDER that has good depth. He has a below-average CHANGEUP that he doesn't use as a relief pitcher.
    • He has the body of a power pitcher and the solid stuff to go with it. He is competitive. But he needs more stamina to last later into games.

    • Jared doesn't give up very many home runs.

    • Wells tries to get hitters to chase his pitches rather than throwing strikes. He brings a gridiron mentality to the mound. But he can be a bit arrogant, so he needs to dial that back a little bit. His stubbornness was a barrier to him learning the pitch sequences he needs to succeed in Triple-A in 2006. And at times, Wells tended to rush his delivery.

  • He should be a good #4 or #5 starter, or pitch in middle relief in the Major Leagues.

The Padres worked him out of the bullpen for the first time in June, 2007 with the Portland Beavers (PCL).
  •

    FIELDING:

    • A former high school quarterback, Jared is athletic. He fields his position well.

    CAREER INJURY REPORT:

    • June, 2007: Wells pulled a hamstring while still with the Mobile BayBears. When he was promoted to the Portland Beavers, he came back too soon. "I started to get out over my front foot, got hit hard and lost my confidence," Jared said.
    • Late in June, 2010: Wells was on the D.L. for about a week or so.

    • April 13-22, 2012: Jared was on the D.L. with upper back spasms.

    • May 29-June 21, 2012: Wells was on the D.L.

    • July 4, 2012: Jared was on the D.L. chest strain.
