PERSONAL:
|
- Jones was a boyhood friend of Ryan Zimmerman, Nationals 3rd baseman.
- Justin committed to Tennessee in 2002, his senior year at Kellam HS, Virginia Beach, Va. But he signed with the Cubs, instead, starting his pro career. Billy Swoope was the scout who signed him.
- On Easter Sunday in 2003, Jones was the starting pitcher in the first-ever, 9-inning no-hitter for the Lansing Lugnuts. Justin threw 7 innings, stuck out 8 and walked three. He got relief help from Wes O'Brien and Mark Carter.
- Baseball America rated Justin as the #2 prospect in the Cubs' organization entering the 2004 season. But he dropped to 16th-best in the spring of 2005, and in 2006, the Baseball America Prospect Handbook had Jones as #21 in the Minnesota farm system.
He wasn't ranked in 2007 and 2008 by Baseball America.
|
July 31, 2004: The Twins acquired Jones in a blockbuster four-team trade. Chicago Cubs acquired five-time All-Star shortstop Nomar Garciaparra from the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox received shortstop Orlando Cabrera from the Expos and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz from the Twins in the deal, with the Cubs sending shortstop Alex Gonzalez and minor leaguers Francis Beltran, a right-hander, and Brendan Harris, an infielder, to Montreal. Minnesota gets minor-league pitcher Justin Jones from the Cubs. December 7, 2006: The Nationals organization chose Jones out of the Twins' system during the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft. He has matured and improved his work ethic.

PITCHING:
|
- Jones has an 87-94 mph FASTBALL with late life and a very good breaking pitch. He has pretty good arm speed on his CHANGEUP and has a very good 74-79 mph looping CURVEBALL, a good SPLITTER, a decent SLIDER that has some spin, but not much depth and a CUT FASTBALL that runs in on the hands of a righthanded hitter.
He can throw his biting curve at any point in the count. None of his pitches is straight.
- Justin has been described as having a build like Chuck Finley's--a long, elastic look scouts like to see. Jones has a loose, quick arm. It is a good arm.
- Justin worked on his delivery with Twins minor league pitching coordinator Rick Knapp, in 2005. That helped him improve his command. It is a loose, easy arm action that he has now, no longer having the mechanical hitch that made his elbow fly up too high during his delivery.
|
Jones shows a lot of poise. He is not afraid to challenge hitters.Jones is very effective at shutting down lefthanded batters.Justin got some sound advice: "A friend of mine told me it's not what you do when things are going well, it's what you do and how you act when things aren't going well," Jones said.

CAREER INJURY REPORT:
|
- July, 2003: Jones missed a couple of weeks with shoulder tendinitis -- a tired arm and shoulder. He returned for five more starts, then wore down again.
- April, 2004: Justin started the season on the D.L. with a sore elbow.
- April-July, 2005: Jones missed the first half of the 2005 season with a strained elbow ligament.
- November, 2007: Justin suffered a knee injury playing basketball. It looked like he was going to miss all of the 2008 season because of the blown-out knee.
