  • Reyes graduated from Francisco del Rosario Sanche High School in Santo Domingo.
  • He enjoys fishing and dancing.

  • Al's wife's name is Sally.

  • April 11, 2008: Reyes was arrested early in the morning hours after "falling down, picking a fight, and spitting blood at the patrons of a popular Hyde Park night spot," according to a report in the St. Petersburg Times.

Reyes was celebrating his 38th birthday. Witnesses said the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. ET when Reyes "fell against a ceramic pot inside the bar" and apparently thought he had been pushed. The 38-year-old than began exchanging words with patron Eduardo Mora, who promptly punched Reyes in the face. The paper reported that Reyes than "began to spit blood on the people in the area and began to swing his arms about."

Tampa Police Lt. William Ferguson wrote in the official release that Reyes "continued spitting blood and thrashing about," despite frequent attempts by the police to contain the 230-pound right-hander.

Reyes was Tasered twice after refusing command from police authorities to stay down.

In mid-July, prosecutors dropped their case against Reyes. But the man who struck Reyes was being prosecuted for battery.

PERSONAL:

  • Reyes has a good FASTBALL, a hard SLIDER, and a good CHANGEUP that adds illusionary hop to his heater.
  • In 1995, Al seemed to come out of nowhere, playing a key role in the Brewers' bullpen.

Then, in 1996, almost as quickly, he disappeared due to Tommy John surgery.

But he came back. And after coming to the Orioles midway through the 1999 season, Reyes pitched well.

  • Reyes is a strikeout pitcher, coming out of the bullpen as a solid middle-innings reliever.

  • When Reyes enters the game he exudes calm. The veteran has become the reliable rock-solid closer the Rays have long needed.

"He walks out there and you can see that he's under control, like, 'I got it,'" Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

  • Reyes enjoyed a career year in 2005, his first full Major League season since 1999. He was a vital piece of the St. Louis bullpen.

    BREAKDOWN VS. RIGHTIES AND LEFTIES

  • In 2005, lefthanded hitters hit only .174 off the righty throwing Reyes.

In 2007, Al allowed lefthanded hitters a .240 average with 7 home runs in 121 at-bats, while he held righthanded hitters to a .187 average with 6 homers in 107 at-bats.

In 2008, Reyes was hit pretty hard by lefthanded batters, who hit .300 with one home run in 30 at-bats, but Al held righthanded hitters to a .226 average with one home run in 53 at-bats.
  • As of the start of the 2009 season, Reyes had a career record of 23-16 with a 3.82 ERA, having allowed 53 home runs and 340 hits in 429 innings.
PITCHING:

  • Al does a decent job with the glove.
  • He is adequate at holding runners on base.
FIELDING:

  • August 1995: Reyes underwent Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow. He spent almost all of the 1996 season recovering.
  • July 24-September 9, 1998: Al went on the D.L. with a strained right elbow.

  • October 3, 2005: Reyes suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in his right elbow, requiring reconstructive Tommy John surgery. Al did not pitch in the post-season for the Cardinals and started the 2006 season on the D.L.

  • 2006: Al was rehabbing from the Tommy John surgery.

  • July 4-18, 2007: Reyes, suffering from a "slightly" strained rotator cuff injury, went on the 15-day D.L.

  • April 15-May 14, 2008: Al was on the D.L. with an impingement in his right shoulder.

  • June 13-July 18, 2008: Reyes was on the D.L. with right shoulder tendinitis.
